Moxibustion

What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a heat therapy technique applied to acupoints in which a Chinese herb is burnt known as Artemisia Vulgaris, Ai Ye or Moxa. The Moxa is held close enough to the affected area in order to feel a comfortable warmth but does not make direct contact with the skin. Moxa may be used in combination with acupuncture or may be used on its own.

The Different Forms of Moxibustion?
Moxibustion come in different forms such as Moxa cones (shown in the above photos), Moxa rolls or a Moxa box may be used (shown in the photo below) where Moxa sticks or dried Moxa can be placed inside of the box and burnt; the Moxa box is placed on the affected area which is commonly the abdominal area of the body.

What to Expect During Treatment?
During the application of Moxibustion it is normal to feel a comfortable warmth in the affected area. It is important to advise your Chinese medicine practitioner whether the warmth starts to become uncomfortable.

What to Expect After Treatment?
It is normal to feel a mild warmth in the treated area for a brief time. Adverse events of Moxibustion is unlikely to occur, however; according to medical literature instances of burning sensations and blisters have been reported. It is important that you inform your Chinese medicine practitioner whether you feel any burning sensation. You may be advised to use a cold towel to cover the area or place the area under cold water for 5 to 10 minutes. If there are any blisters you may be advised to place a non-adhesive dressing over the blister/s.
